The days of obtaining and storing patient images on pieces of film are almost over. Since 2006, when we pioneered this technology in Jamaica, we have been utilizing a Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).

PACS is a technology that affords storage, access and manipulation of patient’s images. It links diagnostic devices (modalities) and computers that have the necessary DICOM (Digital Communication) viewer application installed.

This creates advantages, such as being able to print studies on paper, film or compact disc (CD), or even to send studies over the Internet to other doctors or facilities. The danger of misplaced or misfiled files and/or films is eliminated. Images can be retrieved very quickly and easily.

Over a year ago, our ICT Department upgraded our PACS from a P.C. with Windows platform to a Mac (Apple) platform, which performs more efficiently. Our ICT staff speaks the languages of both Windows and Mac platforms.
